Samsung is hoping to replace passwords with iris scanning in the Galaxy Note7, available in South Africa next month.

The 5.7 inch phablet was announced today at the Samsung Unpacked event in New York, and streamed to various locations around the world.

The new smartphone features advanced security features, including scanning the users eye to unlock the phone or when using Samsung Pay. The iris scanner also lets users access a secure folder that is only available to the owner of the phone.

Craige Fleischer, director of integrated mobility at Samsung SA says the company is in talks with local banks and hopes to launch Samsung Pay in the country next year.

The device features the curved edge design the company pioneered with the Galaxy S6 Edge. The Note7 and its stylus are water resistant.

The stylus, called the S Pen, has a smaller tip than previous versions. The 0.7mm tip has improved pressure sensitivity.

The phone uses a Type C connection to charge, and comes with a micro USB adapter free-of-charge with all devices. This allows users to use older accessories with the Note7.

The Galaxy Note5 was launched last year and the company will not be launching a Note6 and skipping straight to the Note7. This was done, Fleischer says, to keep naming consistency with their other high-end devices, the Samsung S7 and S7 Edge.

The Galaxy Note7 will be available locally from September. Pre-registration at various operators will be available from this week.

There will also be a pre-order special that will come with the Galaxy Note7 as well as two screen protectors, a back cover and a fast charging wireless stand.

It will be available in blue, gold and black.

A South African price has not been set yet for the device.
