Duxbury Networking, the distributor of Netgear products, has announced details of a new 'smart' WiFi router featuring 802.11ac and 802.11ad WiFi technology. Dubbed the Nighthawk X10 AD7200, it is designed to deliver ultra-smooth 4K streaming while supporting virtual reality (VR) gaming, instant downloads and instant backup applications. Targeted at the home market, it will be released locally in early 2017.

According to Tobie van Schalkwyk, Netgear Business Development Manager at Duxbury Networking, it is the first and fastest router for these applications: "Netgear's ground-breaking Nighthawk X10 raises the performance bar, being capable of setting record speeds for moving large video files within a network and to the cloud.

"Today's video files are getting larger, as 4K resolution, VR and augmented reality technologies gain in popularity. Offloading from capture devices and moving these increasingly substantial files are often challenging and time-consuming tasks. The new Nighthawk is powerful enough to move these files at unprecedented speeds, while providing simplified access once the files are stored on the network," he says.

The Nighthawk X10 is powered by a 1.7GHz Quad Core processor, Quad-Stream Wave 2 WiFi architecture and next-generation, high-speed (60GHz) 802.11ad WiFi, offering combined wireless speeds of up to 7.2Gbps, facilitating instant downloads, backup and minimal latency during online video game play. In addition, the latest MU-MIMO technology supports simultaneous streaming to multiple devices, while its 160MHz doubles WiFi speeds to mobile devices.

"The Nighthawk X10 is the first router to run Plex Media Server software without the need for a computer," notes Van Schalkwyk. "Plex organises movies, TV shows, music, video and photo collections, making it easy for users to find and enjoy the content."

He says the Nighthawk X10 is also Netgear's first router to be designed for the home market to include a 10 Gigabit LAN SFP+ fibre port. "In addition, two USB 3.0 ports and six Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, supporting Dual Gigabit Ethernet Port aggregation mode, allow for faster file transfers, up to 2Gbps wired speeds. This simplifies the task of adding storage for backup and file transfer over WiFi."

Key features of Nighthawk X10 include high-performance active antennae for improved WiFi coverage and faster speeds, while storage options associated with the Nighthawk X10 include six months of free, unlimited Amazon Drive backup for the off-site, cloud storage of copies of users' files.

Van Schalkwyk adds the new Netgear Up app will help users to configure the router from the convenience of any Android or iOS mobile device.
