Disaster recovery and virtualisation management software company, Veeam has expanded its partnership with Cisco by introducing the Cisco HyperFlex hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) platform.

According to Veeam, the cloud-based platform consists of the integration of Veeam Availability Suite with the Cisco unified computing system (UCS), an architecture data centre server product composed of computing hardware , management software and more. The Cisco HCI platform is designed to enhance efficiency in the modern hybrid cloud era, reduce backup and recovery times while improvingIT systems availability.

Peter McKay, president and chief operating officer, Veeam, says reducing recovery time for data and applications is paramount for businesses.

"By combining Veeam's proven availability solutions with Cisco's next-generation HyperFlex platform, we can offer customers unmatched data and application availability. This means a business can realise its investment in IT, without the production downtime that stifles its ability to execute and deliver innovative products and services to customers."

The introduction of the solution builds on a successful collaboration between Veeam and Cisco, which began in 2013 with joint solutions based on the Cisco UCS server technology and the Veeam availability suite, notes Veeam.

Claude Schuck, regional manager at Veeam Africa, says: "The integration of Cisco and Veeam's solutions allows us to reach further enterprise customers. We're taking the strain off the production environment, giving great flexibility for how and when businesses back up, not just during set windows, because of the improved copy speed and new integration.

"Customers expect organisations to deliver products and services around the clock and want access irrespective of time, device, or location. Being able to meet the expectations of an always-on enterprise makes the business more competitive and more relevant in the digital world," he explains.

According to the 2016 Veeam Availability Report, 67% of South African respondents revealed their organisations' applications encounter unplanned downtime caused by IT failures, external forces or other factors up to ten times per year. The report also found that the average cost of downtime for mission-critical applications is $89 308 per hour; for non-mission-critical applications, this cost is $55 791 per hour.

"Digital transformation is driving explosive growth for Cisco HyperFlex," says Kaustubh Das, Cisco VP, Product Management, Storage. "Veeam's data protection solution is now deeply integrated with HyperFlex. This integration helps our customers realise the full potential of a next-gen, hyper-converged infrastructure while allowing for rapid business adaptability, minimising risk, and decreasing downtime for today's 24.7.365 operations."
