South Africa-based multinational mobile operator MTN has appointed PeerApp as the local content delivery solution for operations in a few of its global regions. The move is in a bid to improve customer quality of experience and loyalty.

PeerApp is a US-based global provider of local content-delivery solutions that augments operator networks to deliver streaming video, live event streaming and other over-the-top (OTT) content to end-customers with a higher quality of experience. The company says it has 500 customers whom are spread over 100 countries globally.

Says the company: "With mobile consumption of media and entertainment growing in leaps and bounds, MNOs are in need of solutions that can keep up with the demand for real-time mobile media and entertainment. The PeerApp solution aims to accelerate content delivery, bringing content close to vast numbers of subscribers, offloading the network and maintaining high-quality content delivery."

MTN has to date recorded 234.2 million subscribers in 22 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The global group says PeerApp was selected following detailed testing, and based on its market leading status as well as its proven technology which includes PACache, a transparent open content caching solution- scaling from under 1 Gpbs traffic handling capacity through to 150Gbps in one system where cable, telco, and mobile operators find an appropriate approach to augment their networks with a local approach to content delivery.

"We have seen an increase in subscribers acquiring smart mobile devices, and in the consumption of video and other heavy content. The PeerApp solution will optimise the customer broadband experience on the MTN network. By utilising this solution, MTN is enabling customers to download content faster, thus improving the customer experience and network efficiencies," said Navi Naidoo, Network Technology General Manager at MTN Group.

Earlier this month, the local subsidiary of the group MTN SA indicated it is expecting its digital business to see triple-digit growth in 2017. MTN SA CEO Mteto Nyati, said revenue from digital jumped about 77% year-on-year for the 12 months ended 31 December 2016. This was attributable to local and international content, and digital revenue now contributes 16% to MTN SA's total data revenue.

"Last year, the digital revenue was from very basic services, ring-back tones and music, etc. But in October last year, we put together a business case, which has recently been approved, that will help us to deliver eight new digital services in SA. You will start to see the impact of this coming out in this current financial year ? probably starting around June ? and we expect triple-digit growth out of the digital business in this current financial year," he added.

The telco confirmed that digital revenue now contributes 16% to its total data revenue and that it will be launching eight new digital services in SA in the coming year, of which PeerApp might be one.

Speaking on the global appointment, Kiran Pande, regional vice president of sales at PeerApp, says the increasing trend where subscribers flock to the operator who can deliver video content with good QoE is an indication of the times to come for the company. "PeerApp gives mobile network operators a competitive advantage as it keeps up (through numerous solutions) with the growing demand for mobile content delivery."
