Cognition Holdings saw gross revenue grow by almost 61% to R279 million for the year ended 30 June.

The JSE-listed company says it was pleased with the results "in light of the difficult economy" and also given the fact that its Fax2Email service saw revenue decline by more than its budgeted 25%, dropping 38%.

"Positive inroads were made in further transitioning the group into three broadly defined strategic areas: consulting, data collection, and research and analytics," says CEO Mark Smith.

"We anticipate trading conditions to remain challenging given the current state of the economy and the uncertain political outcomes; however, each of our channels to market have strong leadership and are well versed in leveraging maximum value in difficult trading conditions," he adds.

The group is a multi-disciplinary data collection, communication and research company that provides services to the fast-moving consumer goods ecosystem, media, digital companies and corporates.

The group changed its name from FoneWorx to Cognition Holdings in November 2014, when it moved from the JSE's AltX to the main board.

Cognition's headline earnings per share, for the year ended 30 June, grew by 2% to 13.52cps and the company declared a gross final dividend of 8.5cps, up slightly from 8cps a year ago.

After the deduction for agency revenue, net revenue was up 11.5% or R150 million and gross profit grew by 22.5% to R99.8 million. Cognition's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation was up 23.4% year-on-year to R29 million.

In February, the group acquired the remaining 37% shareholding in the BMi Sport Group for R8.5 million.

Cognition says its active data exchange services division saw revenue increasing by 2.7% and gross profit for the segment increased by 18%. This improvement was despite a significant decline in the Fax2Email service compared to the previous year. Active data exchange services are provided within SA as well as in 36 African countries and in the past year 4.2% of its revenue was attributed to Africa sales, compared to 4.78% a year ago.

The knowledge creation and management segment saw revenue grow by 19.5%, with gross profit up 32.2%.
