SA's third mobile operator, Cell C, has appointed a data centre provider as it moves ahead with its plans to roll out a 4G network.

The company says it has appointed Teraco Data Environments to fulfil its data centre requirements in support of the deployment of its new R5 billion nationwide 4G network.

Cell C says the official launch of the centre is this evening, but the company is already making use of Teraco's services. Teraco has been appointed in addition to Cell C's other data centre vendors.

Teraco has two global best practice data centre facilities - one in Cape Town and the other in Johannesburg. Cell C will use both of these facilities as part of its network expansion and upgrade plans for 2010 and beyond.

Founded in 2007, Teraco provides vendor-neutral data centres in SA. The first phase of its Johannesburg data centre is expected to open this quarter, and the company aims to expand to other sites.

The appointment of Teraco follows Cell C's announcement last week that it had signed a R2.9 billion deal with Chinese telecoms provider ZTE to supply a HSPA+ network. Cell C is expected to soon announce the appointment of the second vendor that will carry out the remaining part of the nation-wide implementation.

At the time of the ZTE announcement, Cell C CEO Lars Reichelt said this was the operator's first big step towards transforming Cell C into a “possibilities provider”.
