There are around 55 000 users of Twitter in SA, with approximately 1.5 million monthly tweets, according to a recent report on local Twitter use.

Fuseware has released the South African Twitter Report 2010, which provides analysis and demographics of Twitter usage in SA.

In compiling the report, Fuseware profiled Twitter between March and April this year. It states that 4.5% of SA sites reference Twitter, and that it's the 7th most visited site in SA.

The report reveals Twitter has a high mobile penetration, with mobile devices being used to deliver 35% to 40% of messages on the micro-blogging platform.

The report indicates the user name 'Fifa World Cup' has the second highest number of followers, and ranks number 13 in terms of followers.

In terms of hash tags, which provide a mechanism for providing searchable tags, 'worldcup' is ranked 10th, with terms 'worldcup2010' ranked at 18 and 'wc2010' in at 20.

Sport doesn't feature as a predominant interest, having a fairly small interest rating. Popular interests in SA include love, life, music, and Africa.

The report also reveals the most talked about companies in SA on Twitter: Vodacom, Microsoft and Eskom. The study's analysis of Twitter posts indicates many of the Tweets involving these companies are negative.
