Until recently, there was a lot more focus on collocation and managed services than virtualisation and cloud computing.
This is according to Andre Schoeman, a data centre specialist at converged telecoms company, Neotel.
Schoeman says as the uptake of virtual server environments inside the business infrastructure grew, so did the acceptance of virtual server computing environments as a reliable alternative to physical servers.
“Customers were wary of moving business-critical data to virtual or cloud servers. Over time, however, customers started creating their own private virtual server environments, which translated into businesses hosting the physical servers that operated their virtual platforms,” he says.
Schoeman believes the familiarity and trust of the virtual host environment prompted customers to explore additional efficiencies which virtual servers could give them.
ITWeb is hosting the Virtualisation and Cloud Computing Summit on 27 July at The Forum, Bryanston, to address various issues affecting cloud computing and virtualisation.
The event will feature industry insights and case studies by opinion leaders and legal experts, including a keynote address from Dr Angus Hay, Neotel's CTO, who will talk about the infrastructure for cloud computing in SA.
