Cisco releases 'fastest' wireless AP

London, 01 Feb 2012

In response to the increasing pressure placed on wireless networks to provide seamless connectivity for a multitude of devices, Cisco has announced the release of the Aironet 3600 Series Access Point (AP).

The wireless AP supports the 802.11n wireless standard and is said to provide more stream and range than its predecessors.

Recent statistics show the number of people who own a tablet in the US almost doubled from December 2011 to January 2012 (from 10% to 19% of the total population).

According to Cisco, it is imperative for the enterprise to cater for the next-generation workforce and the devices they will bring to the work environment.

Cisco also says research has shown the average person owns 1.4 mobile devices. "While these market changes are great, with them come considerable IT challenges," says Cisco's senior director of marketing for borderless networks, Inbar Lasser-Raab.

Unveiled at the CiscoLive! Europe event, in London, on Tuesday, the Aironet 3600 Series AP is said to provide 30% faster performance, higher speed at greater distances and compensation for individual devices.

VP and GM of Cisco's Wireless Networking business unit, Sujai Hajela, says people have come to expect more from their mobile devices: "Faster performance and constant, highly-secure connectivity for any device to make the most of any service, whether it be from the cloud or data centre."

The Cisco Aironet 3600 Series AP is available for shipping globally. With external antennae, the router is available for $1 595, and with internal antennae it goes for $1 495.
