Listed outsourcing company EOH is spending about R10 million on training and internships for school-leavers and graduates.

The company yesterday afternoon said it would take in a total of 620 people for training and internship with the aim of giving them skills so they can enter the marketplace.

CEO Asher Bohbot says the first group of 300 is already “on board”, and the second batch of young people will start in April. He says the school-leavers will be given a combination of on-the-job and classroom training, while the graduates will take up internships.

Bohbot says EOH hopes to keep “many” of the young people as employees. EOH currently employs about 4 000 people.

EOH embarked on an initiative to see how business could aid government in creating jobs about eight months ago, notes Bohbot. He says the private sector should take responsibility for job creation and play a bigger role than the state.

Bohbot believes there are sufficient jobs in SA, but that people are lacking in skills. He says EOH's programme will hopefully “kick-start” careers.

EOH has also set up a math and science centre initiative for 11 East Rand schools and has a dedicated in-house function to manage the project.
