The transformative role of cloud computing

Cloud computing is impacting and transforming IT, and new employment roles will emerge as a result.

This is according to Silvio Rugolo, VP EMEA software and consulting at BMC, a software solutions company, who notes that cloud computing changes the way in which IT infrastructure is built and delivered, and this has a trickle-down effect to the way in which organisations distribute work. This, in turn, can lead to new roles being developed, including, but not limited to, cloud administrators, orchestration specialists and tenant administrators.

Rugolo emphasises that, within these developments, the customer holds real power.

Using cloud computing enables self-service and instant gratification, he says, adding that there is also the benefit of real-time cost optimisation and no lock-in to vendors.

BMC Day in South Africa

In conjunction with ITWeb, BMC will host an executive forum on cloud computing, data centres, service support and application operations, on 22 May. Click here for more information.

However, customers wanting to adopt a cloud computing solution need to be aware of 'cloud washing', he says. There is a difference between marketing innovations and real innovations, he cautions. At a very basic level, all cloud architectures have similar structures, and using definitions from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Gartner should help in differentiating between marketing and real innovation.

According to Gartner and the NIST, cloud computing should have the following characteristics: scalability and elasticity, shared resource pooling, and service-based or self-service abilities, and it should use Internet technology or have broad network access.

Rugolo is a speaker at BMC Day in SA, which takes place on 22 May, and also features keynote speaker Lewis Pugh, a renowned environmental campaigner. At the event, delegates will learn about how to automate IT, and can also participate in discussions that focus on building and operating a working cloud solution. Other areas that will be covered include application operations, service support and data centres.
