Cellphone operator MTN has announced the availability of three new plans, starting from R14.95.

MTN says this follows an observation that a number of MTN subscribers, who have BlackBerry smartphones, do not have the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) activated.

Serame Taukobong, chief marketing officer at MTN SA, says there are a number of reasons for subscribers not activating BIS and the operator needed to address the range of customer requirements by bringing more options to the table.

MTN says the result was a trio of BlackBerry plans designed for BlackBerry users who do not use the full range of BIS features, namely BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), e-mail, Internet browsing and social networking.

Options

The basic plan - the Messaging plan - costs R14.95 and gives subscribers access to BBM and one Web-based e-mail account. MTN says the plan is intended for customers who use their BlackBerry to send and receive e-mail and keep in touch using BBM, but don't need to browse the Internet or use any other data services.

The MTN Social plan, for R19.95, allows users to access social networks (including Facebook and Twitter), download applications from BlackBerry App World, browse the Internet and use BBM, as well as one BlackBerry e-mail account.

The third of MTN's new plans, the Social and E-mail plan, costs R29.95 per month and is tailored for customers who use BBM, Web browsing, e-mail and social networking. The plan also gives access to one Web-based e-mail account.

MTN says the existing BIS plan, at R59, is still available on the MTN network. The original plan offers unlimited access to BlackBerry data services. This includes Internet access, BBM, social networking, BlackBerry App World and up to 10 supported corporate and personal e-mail accounts.

The new BlackBerry service plans are available immediately on the MTN network, says Taukobong, who notes that most young people use BBM as their primary means of communication.

The MTN Messaging and Social plans both have a data allowance of 10MB each, while the Social and E-mail plan has a 25MB data allowance. All additional data access not included in this cap is charged at R1 per MB.
