The City of Cape Town will host SharePoint Saturday, a free technology and enterprise content management community event.
SharePoint Saturday Cape Town will be held on 8 September, at Sanlam's head office, in Bellville.
Marc Fletcher, sales and marketing director at Intervate, a sponsor of the event, said SharePoint Saturday is an educational, informative and lively day filled with sessions from respected SharePoint professionals, covering a wide variety of SharePoint-orientated topics.
He also pointed out that SharePoint Saturday was conceptualised in early 2008 as an event that would take place once a year, in Virginia Beach, and is now a worldwide affair being held in different cities.
Microsoft SharePoint is a Web application platform developed by Microsoft and was unveiled in 2001. The platform has historically been associated with intranet content management and document management, but recent versions have significantly broader capabilities.
Fletcher believes the event comes at an opportune time, since Microsoft has just released the Office 2013 beta and attendants will get a chance to share their knowledge and experiences with this new offering.
In August 2012, Microsoft unveiled its Office 2013 customer preview. The standard software package includes Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013, a platform for managing teamwork in the familiar Microsoft Office environment.
Fletcher adds that, since 2007, the popularity of the SharePoint platform has resulted in the development of a significant number of third-party solutions aimed at expansion and enhancement of SharePoint functionality.
Among the speakers lined up for the event are: Alistair Pugin, director of Pragmatic Works Cape Town; Bradley Chetty, SharePoint consultant at Sanlam; Intervate's delivery director, Troy Gerber; UI/UX designer Roxanne Pearce; and a host of other local and international speakers.
Pearce will be discussing the relevance of user interfaces and user experience design, with a focus on responsive and metro design. She says this is a hot topic since the unveiling of SharePoint 2010 - a platform that has enabled the implementation of W3C standards on SharePoint Web solutions.
According to Pearce, to practically use a responsive design means it can be viewed and updated on the go.
“Mixing this with the metro design language keeps the design fresh, with clean tiled interfaces, and clear, crisp fonts and icons, thus integrating elements and leading to a more intuitive experience,” Pearce explains.
“Responsive Web design is the way forward for Web solutions of all types, whether it be a public Web site, a user experience platform, or even a metro designed portal. Responsive design facilitates a single solution at a time when device form factor is constantly changing and mobile access is growing significantly,” Fletcher concludes.
