Fall of Cybertron is the recent edition in the line of Transformers games from High Moon Studios. Similar to the previous title, War for Cybertron, it has a solid storyline and is underpinned by fast-paced action.

The game follows on from the previous title, taking place in the dying days of the planet Cybertron. After decades of war, Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots, takes the remaining Transformers off the planet in a giant spaceship.

At the same time, Megatron, leader of the Decepticons, is looking for a new planet to plunder and identifies Earth as the next target. This begins a race between the Autobots and Decepticons to leave the planet.

The story is told from the perspective of 12 different protagonists on either side of the conflict. Each character is able to morph into vehicle or animal form, ranging from regular vehicles and aircraft, to a giant dinosaur.

In summary

Pros: Great action, full engaging storyline, huge variety in characters and weapons
Cons: Lag on the multiplayer, no campaign co-op
Score: 8/10
Time to completion: 8 hours
Price: R599 on PS3 and Xbox; R299 on PC

Additionally, there are a wide variety of light and heavy weapons to choose from, as well as rare weapons that can be purchased from terminals in the game.

The multiplayer has four different competitive modes: team deathmatch, conquest, capture the flag and headhunter. The co-op game, escalation, is a horde mode for up to four players who have to fend off waves of baddies.

This mode requires players to formulate a team-based strategy and pool resources to unlock arsenals and upgrade weapons. The gamer can choose between one of four character classes, which determine the weapons and special moves.

The variety of characters, weapons and special moves ensures the game is constantly entertaining. On the cloaking levels, the combat becomes a stealthy-type gameplay. The combat is incredibly well balanced. No matter which character the gamer plays, it is incredibly powerful, and yet takes damage fast enough to feel vulnerable.

While this game would typically be aimed at tweens, it has a great storyline and good combat, while the variety of characters adds a great dimension to the gameplay. The Transformers series is worth giving a try, even to those who aren't fans.
