Global Micro Solutions has partnered with Apprenda to introduce a new platform as a service (PaaS) cloud offering, intended to help businesses build, manage and deploy next-generation cloud applications.
The public PaaS provides a way for customers to scale their massive custom application portfolios, quickly and in a secure cloud environment, says JJ Milner, MD and chief cloud architect for Global Micro.
"Global Micro is the first hosting provider in South Africa to offer Azure Services for Windows," says Milner. "The Apprenda Platform extends this infrastructure as a service (IaaS) capability with platform as a service. Global Micro is Apprenda's exclusive delivery partner in Africa and will support the partner and customer community. Apprenda will, in turn, support Global Micro."
The service will help to maximise the productivity of development teams and increase the speed with which updates and new products can be launched.
Milner continues: "The PaaS platform dramatically accelerates enterprise customers' ability to migrate their applications to the cloud, while at the same time reduces cost and improves manageability. Apprenda will inject the necessary cloud components directly into existing .Net applications, providing customers with multi-tenancy, metering, billing, and scale-up and scale-down capabilities."
A PaaS such as this one can mitigate security concerns associated with cloud adoption, he adds. "The Apprenda PaaS platform automatically 'sandboxes' each application, enforces role-based access and control, and takes care of the management and security of the underlying infrastructure."
Managed service providers in locations that have data restrictions and data sovereignty issues find that a hosted virtual PaaS is the smartest way to deliver valuable applications, explains Milner. "Regulated industries are required to ensure their applications are delivered out of locally hosted data centre facilities. Apprenda provides customers in these industries with the flexibility to deliver cloud-based applications on a PaaS platform delivered out of their own on-premise infrastructure, as well as from Global Micro's South African data centre facilities."
