The 'Human Face of Big Data' app, sponsored by EMC, has won the 2013 Webby award for best Educational Tablet App.

Hailed as the 'Internet's highest honour' by The New York Times, The Webby Awards recognise excellence on the Internet across a range of categories, including Web sites, Interactive Advertising & Media, Online Film & Video, Mobile & Apps, and Social. Established in 1996, this year's Webbys received more than 11 000 entries from all 50 US states and over 60 countries worldwide.

Servaas Venter, Country Manager of EMC Southern Africa, says the award reflects EMC's pride in the Human Face of Big Data project. "It represents the most engaging and captivating attempt ever to tap into, and put a human face on, the societal impact of big data," he says. "In essence, it is an innovative smartphone app which engages people around the globe, using the sensors in their phones, through a series of thought-provoking questions about themselves, family, trust and other topics."

The app costs $2.99 and 100% of all proceeds are donated to charity: water, a non-profit organisation that brings safe, clean drinking water to people in developing nations.
