Huawei yesterday introduced its first high-end smartphone, the Ascend P6, at an event in London.

The Chinese company hopes to take on market leaders Samsung and Apple with its new device, which it claims to be the "slimmest smartphone in the world".

The P6 is slimmer than both its rivals, Samsung's Galaxy S4 and Apple's iPhone 5, coming in at just 6.18mm and weighing 120g.

Speaking at the event, Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu emphasised the device's design, as well as its intuitive user interface, Emotion UI. "Building on the success of our Ascend P series of fashion smartphones, the Huawei Ascend P6 provides unsurpassed technology and a design that is simply stunning."

No slimming on features

The Ascend P6 has a 4.7-inch HD in-cell LCD and is powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core processor. Huawei's "MagicTouch" screen technology enhances screen responsiveness even when the user is wearing gloves. It runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 and has a 2000mAh battery.

The Ascend P6 has a 5MP front-facing camera and auto facial-enhancing capabilities. Its 8MP rear-facing BSI camera has F2.0 aperture and 4cm macro view, which enables 1080P full HD video recording and playback.

Huawei's IMAGESmart software enhances imaging capabilities by enabling contrast and colour enhancement, auto scene recognition, object tracing focus, and instant facial beauty support.

The Ascend P6 has been customised with Huawei's Emotion UI. The user interface includes updates to Uni-Home including enhanced security, Me Widget, MagicTouch, and SmartReading. New to Huawei's Emotion UI are the panoramic shoot and facial recognition photography functions.

Automated Discontinuous Reception and Quick Power Control battery optimisation and power-saving technology improves performance by more than 30% compared with smartphone batteries of equal size. Multi-screen AirSharing capability enables the device to connect to a range of devices to share documents or enhance gaming.

The Ascend P6 is available in black, white and pink with matching colour cases. The device will begin shipping to China from this month and to Western Europe from July.
