Entries are again open for the Startup Knight competition, which is aimed at helping local software-based tech start-ups succeed.
Startup Knight was first launched in 2012 by software company Byte Orbit. According to a statement released by the company, the premise of the competition is to promulgate, support and embrace tech start-ups in South Africa by offering a disruptive competition platform.
Unlike similar competitions, Byte Orbit aims to offer ongoing support to the winner of the competition by entering into a partnership.
This year, the competition is divided into two divisions: the concept phase and the start-up phase. Entrants for the concept phase are required to design an innovative concept for software products that will turn heads in the financial and tech industry. The start-up phase winner will be the most innovative software business that disrupts the South African tech industry.
Eight concept phase finalists and eight start-up phase finalists will be announced by 25 October and will be required to pitch to a judging panel at Byte Orbit offices in Durbanville on 2 November. The day prior to the final day of pitching, the finalists are required to attend a mentorship session at the Byte Orbit offices.
The concept phase carries a R100 000 cash prize, while the winning start-up will receive a R100 000 development prize, R100 000 PR prize, and enter into a partnership with Byte Orbit whereby the company takes 15% equity.
The start-ups and concepts will be guided by several successful South African entrepreneurs, including Amit Ramdath (CEO of Byte Orbit), Martin Ras (COO of Byte Orbit), Charl Norman (co-founder of OnNet), Rob Gilmour (MD of RSA Web) and Andre De Wet (GM of PriceCheck).
Participants can enter online until 24 October.
