LG Electronics SA yesterday unveiled its latest contender in the Android smartphone space, the LG G2, at an event in Rivonia, Johannesburg.

The new Android LG flagship, the G2 smartphone, which comes in black and white, has been designed according to consumers' preferences and behaviours.

According to LG Electronics SA MD IL Hwan Lee, the device is the result of thousands of hours of research and development with the consumer in mind. "We took these insights to new heights in developing LG G2, the most exciting and ambitious mobile phone in our company's history."

The device runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 OS and is powered by a Snapdragon 2.26GHz quad-core processor.

The handset is only available with 16GB internal memory and doesn't have a memory card slot. The LG G2 sports a sleek design with round edge corners and there are no buttons on the sides, top or bottom of the body. The key buttons, for volume, camera and power (on and off) are situated at the back of the device, below the rear-facing camera.

"For one thing, the rear key means consumers can find the power button and the volume control without looking at the phone - and this works whether you're right-handed or left-handed," said LG Electronics SA GM Deon Prinsloo.

Prinsloo stated that typically, handsets are held in a user's palms in such a way that the index finger is left free. "So we decided that if your finger is so eager to hang out on the back of the phone, let's give it something to do while it's there."

When it comes to display, size matters, as does comfort, Prinsloo added. The G2 comes with a 5.2-inch display, and boasts full HD display with IPS technology.

According to Prinsloo, smartphones have to serve two masters: our eyes, and our hands. "We've learned from consumers that if their eyes were calling the shots, they'd make a display screen that is as big as possible, but the hand also wants comfort."

The width of the G2 is 2.7 inches and it weighs 143g. The device houses a 3000mAh battery, and boasts a 13MP rear-facing camera and 2MP front-facing camera. The smartphone features an optical image stabiliser (OIS) for clear images taken in dark places and minimises blurriness. LG Electronics claims that although OIS technology is not new, the G2 is the first device to have it incorporated into a 13MP camera.

The smartphone retails for R7 299 and will be available in stores from 1 November.
