Software development projects need to be tackled holistically to ultimately achieve an organisation's software development goals, says Brian Harding, MD of EOH Microsoft Coastal.

There are many factors that contribute to the success or failure of software development within organisations.

On this note, EOH Microsoft Coastal, in partnership with ITWeb, is conducting an online software development survey during October to gain more insight into the current landscape of software development in SA.

"Proper process, client behaviour, fit for purpose technology and the skill level of the team all play a part in successful software development within organisations," says Brian Harding, MD of EOH Microsoft Coastal.

Harding also believes software development projects need to be tackled holistically to ultimately achieve an organisation's software development goals.

Commenting on the software development survey that was undertaken in 2012, Harding says: "The objective of this year's software development online survey is to understand the level of maturity of software development in South Africa, and if it has improved when compared to last year's survey results."

According to Harding, one of the benefits for an organisation to implement a strategic plan for software development is predictable delivery.

"Predictable delivery at the right cost and at the right time undoubtedly adds to the ROI that was originally envisaged by the stakeholders within an organisation when undertaking a software development project."

Harding says some of the main types of technology being used for software development include Mircrosoft, IBM, Oracle and SAP.

Return on investment on an organisation's software development investment must be measured, as many software development projects are run indefinitely. Harding also believes companies should involve software development experts, as this saves money and time.
