MTN has unveiled its Steppa smartphone, a 3.5-inch Android device targeted at SA's mass market.

The device is set at a retail price of R499 on pre-paid plans and features FM radio, a 2-megapixel camera and comes pre-installed with Opera Mini for Internet browsing. As part of the launch promotion, MTN included a three-month free social networking bundle.

MTN says the Steppa has a long-lasting battery life. The operator positions the smartphone as "the most affordable smartphone in SA, breaking the affordability barrier of smartphones to deliver Internet access and a high performance mobile phone handset".

Farhad Khan, chief of customer sales, service and distribution at MTN SA, says the operator's challenge was to bring an affordable device to market, while at the same time ensuring it was not complicated.

Khan says the company hopes the device will allow more people to connect to the Internet. "MTN Steppa throws weight behind efforts to bridge the digital divide and help those who can't afford high-end smartphones to enjoy the capabilities and opportunities presented by the devices."
