MiMiX high availability: Crucial to the success of your business

Johannesburg, 08 Apr 2004

Your organisation spends months planning a B2B strategy. After more months of developing, testing and changing systems, you are ready to embark on the unknown sea of Internet-enabling your business.

How many orders will we take in the first month? Will we receive enquiries from overseas? How user-friendly is the software? Will the project succeed?

Amid much excitement, you go online. And then, totally unexpectedly, the hardware crashes and your online Internet service advertised to your customers to be available 24x7x365, is down for days. Why was this not one of the scenarios your developer told you about?

As companies make more use of the Internet and B2B processing, their systems need to be available for longer periods, not just during daylight working hours.

"More companies are operating across different time zones and 24x7 availability is now a necessity. Because high availability is such a crucial part of one`s business, it is important that the solution is stable, reliable and able to integrate with all popular environments and applications.

But not all downtime problems are related to hardware. Planned database maintenance and system-upgrade tasks are still roadblocks to achieving true continuous availability. And restoring systems from backup can be a time-consuming and business-weakening process.

In short, real-time replication of data to a backup system can be crucial in some environments. Especially today, when more and more companies are operating over the Internet and across international borders and different time zones.

A growing problem is that companies have no time to make application and server backups or perform routine system maintenance. There is also a need for consolidation of heterogeneous server data to reduce the complexity and inconsistency of backups.

Workload balancing is another issue to enable optimal performance for critical production applications.

What is MiMiX for Windows?

MiMiX for Windows is a software replication solution for iSeries customers who are running Windows 2000, Windows NT or .Net.

Real-time replication

MiMiX for Windows provides real-time replication for Windows NT/2000 and .NET environments running on integrated Wintel environments.

Like MiMiX for OS/400, MiMiX for Windows continuously monitors and replicates changes made to open files as they occur, replicating them to one or more Wintel servers over standard network connections. MiMiX for Windows can provide sequential replication, for complete transaction integrity or non-sequential replication for maximum system performance.

Supporting critical functions like concurrent/consolidated saves, workload balancing, and file-level saves and restores, MiMiX for Windows is the ideal solution for high availability, disaster recovery and continuous operations on integrated Wintel environments.

TCM`s role

TCM will investigate your company`s needs with a view to evaluating mission-critical applications. We will analyse areas such as recovery point objective - namely, how much data can you afford to lose, and recovery time objective - how quickly do you need to be up and running.

We also look at areas such as planned and unplanned switching, your consolidated save/restore strategy, the need for concurrent saves, workload balancing, and the available time to make backups.

MiMiX provides single vendor support for heterogeneous platform managed availability needs as well as providing a unified interface and control for heterogeneous platform and application needs, as well as tight integration for the entire application environment.

Management

With MiMiX for Windows, configuration, control and monitoring of the Wintel replication environment is managed through and easy-to-use Windows GUI client that provides straightforward access to all functions.

MiMiX for Windows constantly monitors server health, initiating automatic system failover if any monitored sever fails. Every aspect of the failover process is managed through Windows.

Using standard TCP/IP connectivity, MiMiX for Windows can maintain complete real-time replication between geographically separate systems, protecting against site-loss downtime issues.

MiMiX for Windows is the premier availability solution for larger and more-complex integrated Wintel environments running JD Edwards One World Deployment Server, Siebel Systems eBusiness applications, Lotus Domino, Microsoft SQL Server and many others. And by implementing MiMiX for OS/400 and MiMiX for Windows together. It is compatible in a multiple vendor environment.
