Datacentrix, Financial IQ implement large data storage, archive solution for Fedsure

Johannesburg, 11 Sep 2001

The Enterprise Storage Division of Datacentrix and Financial IQ (part of the IQ Group which is SA`s largest unlisted IT group), have teamed up to install a 11.8TB data storage and archiving solution at Fedsure`s head office in Johannesburg. Fedsure is one of SA`s premier financial services groups and offers a broad range of insurance and financial products and services.

Fedsure required an inexpensive data storage and archiving system to archive and store about 6TB of back-scanned images from the Norwich systems, as well as new production images from the company`s existing Kodak Eastman System. All production and back-scanned data had to be indexed and available `online`. The solution implemented by Datacentrix and Financial IQ is extremely cost-effective and scalable.

The hardware portion of the solution includes an ADIC Scalar 1000 library that is scalable up to 80TB. "The resulting performance, reliability, and cost benefits make the Scalar 1000 especially well suited for imaging, archive, and file migration systems where high capacity and quick information recall are required," says Bertus Homan, Datacentrix Enterprise Storage director.

"The software portion of the solution includes the AMASS file system, which is also from ADIC," he concludes.

AMASS transforms a device typically considered as "offline storage" into truly online direct access mass storage. AMASS presents your automated optical, tape or DVD library as one device and one mount point, with a standard file system interface, consisting of directories and files. Users or applications can write files to or read files from the library the same way they would with magnetic disk without any API development.

By making information easily accessible, the Amass-Scalar combination has unlocked potent business advantages for Fedsure, which wanted a cost-effective way to leverage the value of the data it already has.
