"The dti" completes R4.8m storage and backup project with Datacentrix

Johannesburg, 01 Sep 2003

The department of trade and industry ("the dti") has deployed ADIC (Advanced Digital Information Corporation) Scalar 1000 tape libraries and HP SAN switching equipment and data management software to store the department`s information. The equipment was implemented by IT solutions and infrastructure provider, Datacentrix.

"`The dti` needs to store information, such as company registration details and trade and industry data, for extensive periods of time," explains Flip Swart of system support at "the dti". "The department also needs to store huge volumes of incoming and outgoing electronic mails. The new equipment will enable us to do so quickly and efficiently."

The equipment has been installed at two separate sites in Pretoria - the Civic Centre and the Company and Intellectual Property Registration Office (CIPRO). The major benefit of this type of consolidation of "the dti`s" data repository is that it makes it easier for the department to manage data. Previously the department used different servers and this made the administration process more difficult. "The ADIC and HP equipment was selected for its reliability and proven value for money," adds Swart.

According to Kabelo Makwane, account manager: enterprise systems at Datacentrix, all parties agreed that these products are best suited to "the dti`s" business needs and strategic direction. "On the ADIC side, the products that are used are scaleable, easy to manage and can be extended to four libraries as "the dti`s" capacity requirements grow. The HR equipment that has been installed is also first class and "the dti" will benefit from its investment in this regard.

"With Datacentrix` certification as an Gold partner and our status as an ADIC e-VAR (Enterprise Value Added Reseller), customers like `the dti` are guaranteed that they are getting a top class service. We also have an existing relationship with `the dti`, having supplied the department with hardware and software in the past, giving us an excellent understanding of their business requirements."
