SAMRO enhances productivity with Datacentrix

Johannesburg, 09 Feb 2005

Administrator of performing rights in music, Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO), has upgraded its Braamfontein office`s network with IT infrastructure and solutions provider, Datacentrix, improving access speeds for members and staff and boosting productivity.

According to Dinesh Lalloo, manager: data processing facilities at SAMRO, not only has the organisation seen a substantial improvement in the time taken for day-to-day processing since the installation of HP ProCurve switches, but the new network has maintained constant uptime.

"SAMRO has seen substantial growth - in terms of members, employees and transactions - over the past few years. We found that the old network running at 10Mb to the desktop, although acceptable for more than eight years, needed to be upgraded to meet users` changing needs such as the use of e-mail and gaining access to the Internet. Despite the previous network infrastructure being robust, it was too slow to cope effectively with SAMRO`s graphic intensive environment.

"Based on Datacentrix`s recommendations, we`re now running approximately 120 machines networked across 13 floors using a two-tier gigabit copper network. We have also installed a total SAN solution, ADIC Scalar 24 libraries and VERITAS NetBackup software to enhance the previous backup solution."

The new HP ProCurve switches, which provide a lifetime warranty, more than meet SAMRO`s needs and will cater for the organisation`s requirements for the next few years, says Sanette Durandt, account manager at Datacentrix.

"SAMRO has also opted for a 7x24 maintenance agreement on both the servers and the tape libraries purchased from Datacentrix."

Says Lalloo: "Datacentrix`s pricing is highly competitive and the company suggested the ideal solution for SAMRO`s environment. As one of HP`s largest local networking partners, Datacentrix is equipped to provide the technical skills and expertise needed to implement and support the equipment.

"The high level of service that Datacentrix provides is key to SAMRO, especially in terms of maintaining the high level of availability necessary for us to run our business. Additionally, Datacentrix`s strong BEE credentials and strategies met with our executives` approval process on major suppliers. The combination of all of these factors has resulted in a positive partnership and a relationship that we anticipate will continue into the future," he concludes.
