Open Text Collaborates with Microsoft on Digital Asset Management

Johannesburg, 16 Nov 2005

Independent provider of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) software, Open Text, has announced its commitment to offering Open Text`s Artesia Digital Asset Management (DAM) solution for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database platform to help customers more effectively manage digital assets. Open Text solutions are available in South Africa through IT infrastructure and solutions provider, Datacentrix.

The announcement demonstrates the companies` shared view of the significant need, especially within the media and entertainment industry, for an ECM strategy that addresses the complexities of creating, managing and distributing rich digital media, such as video, audio, photos and graphics.

By using SQL Server 2005 with Open Text`s Artesia DAM, customers will benefit from a low total cost of ownership (TCO), while utilising sophisticated DAM technology running on a highly available and secure database platform. SQL Server 2005 is well-suited to the demands of customers in the media and entertainment industry, offering the scalability and reliability needed to manage the enormous volume of valuable digital assets customers must maintain.

To facilitate deployment of the combined solution, Microsoft has developed the SQL Server Migration Accelerator (SSMA) tool, software that dramatically accelerates the migration of back-end data to the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 platform. The SSMA tool reduces the cost and time required for analysis, migration and follow-up testing, effectively streamlining the transition of customers` DAM solutions to the SQL Server platform.

"SQL Server 2005 marks the biggest release in SQL Server history and will offer customers such as media intensive companies the highest levels of availability, performance and security," says Mike Tuchen, General Manager for SQL Server at Microsoft. "The media and entertainment industry has experienced a great impact from the proliferation of digital content and distribution channels. Through our work with Open Text, we are able to provide DAM to media and entertainment companies, as well as the ability to integrate DAM with other components that comprise an overall content management strategy."

The Open Text Artesia Digital Media Group helps customers address the growing competitive and regulatory pressures to improve the management of digital media content. This group also leads Open Text`s horizontal strategy for digital media as a key component of ECM and champions the specific ECM requirements of media companies worldwide. Customers include Time Warner, DaimlerChrysler, Discovery Communications, DreamWorks, Electronic Arts, General Motors, HBO and the U.S Department of Defense. Open Text is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner with a track record for delivering powerful ECM solutions that extend Microsoft applications.

"Open Text`s DAM customer base has always been on the cutting edge of the digital revolution and are constantly facing complex technology challenges, such as global access, achieving speed-to-market and simply managing the proliferation of rich media within their organisations," says Rob Shaw, product marketing manager at Datacentrix. "Microsoft is at the vanguard of solving many of these challenges for media-intensive firms and it made sense for Open Text to offer Microsoft`s enterprise-class database platform to its customer base."
