Sasfin Bank Ltd has upgraded its database solution from a 32-bit to a 64-bit environment, boosting performance with the assistance of IT solutions and services provider, Datacentrix.
Established in 1951, and listed on the JSE Securities Exchange South Africa in 1987, the Sasfin Group is a specialist banking and financial services group focused on the entrepreneurial corporate, commercial and private client markets.
According to Lourens van Dyk, Infrastructure Architect at Sasfin, the company needed to replace its existing solution, which had reached its end of life. "Not only did we need to purchase new equipment because the old solution had become too expensive to maintain, we also wanted a secure database that could offer greater performance.
"We opted for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 running on HP Itanium 64-bit technology, which provides a redundant, cost aggressive solution. The decision to go for HP technology was based on the company`s strong relationship with Microsoft and the class-leading performance it provides running Microsoft`s Windows Server 2003 operating system," says Van Dyk. "This solution gives us the best database with top security and the only true 64-bit CPU solution that is well ahead of the game."
Says Johann Coetzee, general manager - Johannesburg at Datacentrix: "With most of Sasfin`s technology solutions already within the HP and Microsoft stables, it made sense for it to continue to use these technologies in order to keep maintenance costs down through standardisation. The new solution will also provide Sasfin with needed scalability and reliability."
