Esquire brings Nelson Mandela Day dream alive by celebrating Madiba's 95th birthday

Pretoria, 17 Jul 2013

For this year's Mandela Day, Esquire Technologies - the digital lifestyle focused computer distributor - took on the mammoth task of finding a Mandela Day project that would be expressive in two folds: honouring Mandela Day and also honouring the legacy by which this day has rooted its path; which is giving our 67 minutes by doing good for the growth of our communities.

"We believe this is the legacy Madiba continues to inspire to and for all South Africans," said Asgar Mahomed, managing director of Esquire Technologies.

Esquire, alongside Caring Women's Forum Pretoria, has chosen N'wa Mhinga - a school that forms its second mammoth task.

"N'wa Mhinga is fulfilling its own legacy by celebrating 50 years of existence this year. N'wa Mhinga is one of the few, if not the only school in Gauteng, to teach strictly in Shangaan," said Mahomed.

N'wa Mhinga, the school, was founded in 1931 at Maraba-Stad in Pretoria. Black children in that area went to a mission school called AME. The only ethnic languages taught at the school were Sepedi and Setswana. The school was then named N'wa Mhinga (meaning born of Mhinga).

It was named in honour of a Shangaan chief in the North Province, who had a reputation of having inspired his people as to the benefits of education, in August 1933.

"The Nelson Mandela Day Event will be taking place on 18 July 2013, a day that marks Nelson Mandela's 95th birthday. This is partly a charity day, an awareness day and a day to honour Nelson Mandela, whom the entire nation is praying for as he remains in hospital."

The event, which will take place at the N'wa Mhinga Primary School, will see the opening of a soup kitchen, the planting of a vegetable garden - as well as the handing out of gifts to 350 school children. The Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Mohamed Enver Surty; Ahmed Mohamed Kathrada, a former political prisoner and an anti-apartheid activist; as well as granddaughters of former president Nelson Mandela, Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway and Swati Dlamini, will also be attending the event.

The Esquire team and all partners involved in this propitious occasion in the South African calendar would like to take this opportunity to wish Tata Madiba a happy birthday.
