Pin-Point establishes SkillsWare division

Johannesburg, 08 Oct 1998

In a bid to address a broader range of training requirements and include additional value added services such as placement and support has led to the Pin-Point Group establishing SkillsWare.

Kelvin Reynolds, well known local IT personality is the architect behind the new division which will continue to offer the high level of IT technical training that Pin-Point Training offers, but also include additional functionality.

"We have conducted research into industry trends both in the US and locally the upshot of which was that stand-alone training institutions are entering an area of diminishing profitability. Customers are demanding wider solutions that offer a broad training and career development product spectrum," says Reynolds.

The new division comprises Pin-Point Training, OS3 formerly The Unix Company which was recently renamed as it now addresses Novell and Microsoft support as well as Unix, and Bosele Careers, a black managed recruitment and careers company within the Pin-Point stable.

"I believe that SA`s training and education sector will be an area of intense activity in the years ahead. The State will play a lesser role in education beyond Grade 9 and little in the way of direct funding for advanced tertiary education. There will however be considerable indirect funding for general skills development as a consequence industry levies as envisaged in the emerging new education and training policy framework.

"It will therefore be up to commerce and industry - as is the case in most of the world - to take up the challenge to meet the demands for skills and skilled employable workers," says Reynolds.

SkillsWare is currently implementing a "graduate support plan" and the establishment of a Bosele Careers office at Pin-Point Training`s facilities. It is also strengthening internal resources and broadening existing training facilities.

This includes refining its "assessment" software, a Pin-Point-developed program which allows employers to determine how familiar their employees are with specific applications.

Reynolds says the challenge for the training business will be to adapt itself fast enough to be able to move beyond accredited technical IT tuition where it has been to the past year.

"I believe that training companies that only offer IT are unlikely to be viable businesses in the near future. Pin-Point, as an aggressive forward-thinking company, will remain competitive and continue to offer world class solutions," says Reynolds.
