Silicon Graphics (SGI), the international visual and enterprise computing supplier, is to change its name next week. The new name is not yet known.

ITWeb has learned that employees have already been informed of the new company image and have been cautioned to keep mum until the official release date on 14 April, when the new company image will be revealed worldwide.

The organisation says it is still known as a graphics company, despite a product range that stretches from high-powered graphics workstations to servers in the supercomputer category.

"In an attempt to address this issue, the company is in the process of renaming and repositioning itself on a global basis," it says in a statement. The general level of awareness of Silicon Graphics will also be raised.

No other information has been released.

Earlier this month, SGI projected a 32c per share loss for the quarter ended 31 March. In January it released its first Intel- and Windows-based system at what the US press called "relatively competitive prices", after withstanding the growing industry standard for years.

Industry analysts say pressure from competitors Sun Microsystems and Hewlett-Packard has left its mark on SGI sales, but that the value of the company`s technology is not appreciated.
