Windows shattered as blast rocks Microsoft building

Johannesburg, 02 Jun 2000

The explosion at Microsoft SA`s Sunninghill offices early this morning left the recently occupied building damaged but caused no injuries, the company says.

Only security guards were on the site when what is believed to be a small explosive device detonated just before 5am today.

"There was a blast outside the building in an open courtyard," says Terry Annecke, marketing director of Microsoft SA. "There is no structural damage to the building and the main damage is broken windows."

Police and forensic experts are investigating the cause of the explosion.

Annecke says morale at the company is high although the attack is disheartening. "Everyone is keen to keep business going as usual and all the staff not on site are working from home." She says the disruption caused will be minimal and adds that there was no damage to the building`s telephone system or network, and that no data has been lost.

"We cannot let this kind of behaviour affect our business," she says.

The company says it will step up security while the investigation is underway.
