Thorsten Freitag, previously operations director in Korea, has stepped forward to take over the position of sub-Saharan Africa MD at Cisco Systems SA.

His new role sees him accepting full responsibility for Cisco`s local office and its expansion programme into sub-Saharan Africa. The company currently has offices in Zimbabwe, Senegal and Nigeria.

"Cisco has identified the African continent as a potential growth market, and with the South African telecommunications market deregulating in 2002, it will present unprecedented growth opportunities for Cisco," says Freitag.

Freitag, who has been with Cisco since 1995, has over 12 years experience in the IT and telecommunications sector. He has a strong enterprise sales and service provider background, having grown the company`s Korean subsidiary revenue by 280%.

The company says he also played an active role in developing the Cisco culture in the offices he has worked in, by identifying potential leaders and developing leadership and management skills in line with the Cisco culture that is focused on customer satisfaction, teamwork and integrity.

"It is my intention to bring this expertise to the local market, and by investing time to develop the human potential that clearly exists in the South African subsidiary," he says.
