Arivia.kom 'COO on indefinite leave`

Johannesburg, 01 Oct 2002

Arivia.kom has announced that its chief operating officer, Mokati Ramphele, is on leave for an indefinite period, due to reasons pertaining to corporate governance. This follows weekend reports that Ramphele was escorted off the premises.

The Business Times reported at the weekend that arivia.kom chief executive Zeth Melele had suspended Ramphele with immediate effect and had him "frog-marched" off the premises because of "a problem with governance".

The newspaper quoted insiders as saying Malele and Ramphele have differed over leadership styles since Ramphele was appointed as an executive director to the board in June.

In an official statement yesterday, the company said Ramphele was on indefinite leave with effect from 20 September. The statement said the situation was subject to an internal resolution process, after which a further statement of clarification would be issued.

Ramphele, a veteran of the local IT industry, was once short-listed to head up IBM`s SA operation and held senior positions at Nedcor. He joined arivia.kom in April 2002, where he set about smoothing out internal processes and the corporate cultures of the merged entities within arivia.kom.
