Government will speed up the process to set up a government-wide call centre this year, president Thabo Mbeki said in his state of the nation address in Cape Town this morning.

Government will also phase in an electronic system, an e-government gateway, in which a directory of government services will be available.

The government gateway project aims to enable the different government computer systems to communicate in order to fast-track service delivery and make services available on a 24/7 basis.

"The process to set up a government-wide call centre will be speeded up. In addition, we will start this year to phase in an electronic system, an e-government gateway, in which the directory of government services will be available, according to citizens` needs rather than the silos of the state bureaucracy, in an electronic version of the multi-purpose community centres," Mbeki said.

"We are determined to ensure that government goes to the people so that we sharply improve the quality of the outcomes of public expenditures intended to raise the standard of living of our people."
