E-learning module raises AIDS awareness

Johannesburg, 11 Nov 2003

Safmarine Computer Services (SCS), a specialist provider of integrated IT business solutions, is raising HIV/AIDS awareness in the workplace with a recently released cost-effective, interactive e-learning module aimed at educating and increasing responsiveness amongst all employees in SA.

E-learning is a cost-effective way of spreading information, especially across geographically-dispersed organisations. Many forward-thinking companies have installed kiosks in canteens and public areas, enabling employees to access learning modules at their own pace. Employees can login anonymously, facilitating a non-threatening and non-discriminatory environment.

Alternatively, if the organisation chooses not to go the anonymous route, the module can be accessed directly from an organisation's existing infrastructure or it can function on a learning management system (LMS). Individual scoring is tracked and progress is assessed at different levels. The LMS then generates a standard report, which makes administration of the learning very user-friendly.

"We've received a great response from large corporations and government but because of the cost-effective nature of e-learning, the module is also very affordable to smaller businesses," says Tertia Albertyn, SCS's eLearning Manager.

To hold the learner's attention, the module is colourful and clearly designed with multimedia, "what if" scenarios and questions and answer sections. "Its very interactive, we've used drag-and-drop crosswords and enticing exercises to keep employees motivated and involved. We can also customise the module's look and feel, branding various elements such as company logos and specific company-relevant information such as appropriate contact names and telephone numbers," says Albertyn.

Course content is comprehensive including three sections. The first covers general information such as the difference between HIV/AIDS; the second section deals with living with HIV/AIDS and discusses why its important to be tested, the testing process and where to get tested; and the last section covers HIV/AIDS in the workplace and how the constitution protects people living with HIV/AIDS.

"E-learning provides a constellation of benefits, in fact it's boundless," says Albertyn. "There are no travel or accommodation costs and courses can be accessed from almost anywhere, at anytime and at a low cost."
