IT Project Manager+ is the fastest growing certification worldwide, says the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA).
"Companies are realising that a lack of project management skills is one of the biggest reasons for IT project failure," says John Venator, visiting CompTIA CEO. "IT Project Manager+ addresses the need of understanding how various skills fit into business objectives as well as project management."
Regional director Lorraine Vorster says SA is beginning to follow the international trend and recognising the value of the IT Project Manager+ certification. "IT workers need to learn how to manage time, projects and people."
Venator agrees these skills are necessary for IT workers, but says the skills developed by IT Project Manager+ are excellent for anyone dealing in project management. "IT skills sets are woven into the fabric of how every company does business."
"Locally, candidates have realised tremendous results in terms of their own definition of productivity," says Vorster. "An increasing number of local companies are supporting the certification."
Oupa Mopaki, CEO of the ICT Sector Education and Training Authority (ISETT SETA), agrees there should be greater emphasis in the ICT industry on project management. "Developing these skills is very much part of the SETA`s exit strategy," he told journalists during a panel discussion at Kyalami last week.
"With the learnership programme we are not aiming to produce more job-seekers," emphasises Mopaki. "As part of the experiential training it is hoped that those taking part in learnerships will acquire the skills they need to team up and become entrepreneurs by learning how to put together business plans and other management skills."
