Vee Networks in Nigeria is trading under a new name, and has appointed a former Vodacom executive as its CEO.
The move comes less than two months after the company changed its name from Econet Wireless Nigeria to Vee Networks. At the time, Vee Networks announced it would trade under the Vodacom brand name as Vodacom Nigeria. However, Vodacom announced last week that it was withdrawing from Nigeria.
Vee Networks` board of directors met in Lagos on Thursday and approved Vmobile as the company`s new trading name.
The directors also ratified the appointment of former Vodacom Congo MD Willem Swart as CEO of Vee Networks. Swart had resigned his appointment with Vodacom to pursue a career at Vee Networks.
Swart will lead a team of executives made up of Nigerians and the Vodacom secondees, who have offered to take up employment in the company, to roll-out the Vmobile brand in the coming weeks.
The Vmobile board said in a statement that it regretted the discontinuation of the Vodacom transaction in Nigeria, but said it would make no further comments on the matter. The board also took note of statements being credited to Econet Wireless International (EWI), the company planning to make a $1.8 billion claim against Vodacom. Vmobile reiterated its decision to sever operational ties with EWI.
