Upfront Systems announced today that it will offer training in the popular open source content management frameworks, Zope and Plone.
"We need to show local business that they can depend on high-quality training and support in open source technologies before they`ll consider it as an alternative to proprietary software. Both Zope and Plone are popular and proven technologies in the US and Europe. Locally we`ve seen few implementations, mainly due to lack of training and support. We plan to change that," said Roch'e Compaan, CEO of Upfront Systems.
Upfront Systems delivers customised business applications to both corporate customers and small business, using the open source platforms, Zope and Plone. It has been influential in the local adoption of Zope and Plone, and was the first South African Zope solution provider.
"Five years` experience in the Zope platform makes us the best candidates to train your developers or assist you with the architecture of your Zope application," said Compaan.
Zope is an open source application server for building content management frameworks, intranets, portals and custom applications. Its users include Viacom, Boston.com, SGI, AARP, Red Hat, NASA, the US Navy, IDG (Brazil), General Electric, Verio and www.HireTechs.com.
Plone is built using Zope, and is ideal as an intranet and extranet server, as a document publishing system, a portal server and as a groupware tool for collaboration between separately located entities.
Upfront Systems will offer two courses: a Zope Product Development course and a Plone course. The courses are aimed at businesses that want to take control of their content management and publishing needs. In contrast to proprietary technologies, Zope and Plone offer an open, customisable development platform utilising standard protocols.
In May 2004 Computer Associates announced that it would partner with Zope Corporation and join the board of the Plone Foundation. This move, by one of the world`s software giants, should boost confidence in the platform, and dramatically increase its visibility.
Upfront Systems has been engaged by CA to train several of its developers in Zope and Plone at its head offices in Islandia, New York.
