Nominations are open for this year`s African ICT Achievers Awards, which have been bolstered by four new categories and a call for nominations from across the continent.

The awards ceremony, which will be attended by many industry players, including minister of communications Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, will take place on 6 November at The Dome at Northgate.

According to Jane Mosebi, MD of ForgeAhead, the company running the event in conjunction with the Department of Communications, this year`s theme is "African Excellence" and will focus on achievements throughout Africa.

"The theme also encompasses the whole spectrum of ICT, so that while we have recognised key players in various ICT industries before, we also want to recognise work done at the grassroots level," says Mosebi.

She says there will be a total of 14 categories - seven organisational awards and seven individual awards - with an overall organisational and individual winner chosen from the seven.

"There will also be a lifetime achievement award, won last year by Andile Ngcaba, if a suitable candidate is found among the nominees."

The four new categories that have been added to the awards this year are: most innovative ICT company, ICT workplace provider, top minister with an ICT portfolio, and top private sector CIO.

This year the entire judging process will be done online, with the data captured electronically.

"We have already had interest from ICT players across Africa, but of course there are some challenges involved in spreading the word across the continent," she says.

Nominations for the awards close on 30 August.
