Matric students around the country and abroad will be able to receive their final exam results next month via SMS or by dialling a NewsBreak number.

The SABC launched its NewsBreak matric results service in Johannesburg yesterday, saying the system will allow matriculants to access their results directly, in either a voice or SMS format.

"As soon as the results have been released by the Department of Education on 29 December, students can dial the NewsBreak 082 152 number and follow instructions to get their results," says SABC new media editor Judy Sandison.

"Even students on holiday abroad will be able to access results wherever there is a Vodacom network. The number given for the US is +27 82 152 and the UK line is +27 82 234 2900.

"Making use of cellular technology, this service provides callers with detailed and overall results on how well they've performed during the period of writing their final school exams," says Sandison.

The service was first launched in 1999 and has grown increasingly popular, she notes. Last year, over 100 000 callers made use of the matric results service.

"Students who do not have the luxury of a cellphone can make use of a landline to access results, after selecting option six and pressing the hash key to select further options.

"For voice results, students will have to dial on the day of the release, and with the SMS format they have to register in advance, by calling the 082 152 number and following the necessary instructions," says Sandison.

"The SABC news will publish the matric results on NewsBreak in association with Vodacom, Marketel, the State IT Agency, the Department of Education and Nedbank Dezign Banking."
