The ICT BEE Charter Steering Committee has reached consensus on outstanding issues and has finalised the draft empowerment charter.

A statement issued by the Department of Communications this afternoon said the ICT BEE Charter Steering Committee met over the past two days in a break-away session to finalise discussions on the draft Charter.

The talks came after the Steering Committee conceded there had been significant delays over outstanding issues such as compliance by multinationals.

All members of the Steering Committee, including representatives of the Broadcasting, Electronics, Information Technology (IT), Telecommunications, Labour, Community and Government sub-sectors attended this week`s meeting.

The statement says: "The Steering Committee discussed and found consensus on all the issues that were outstanding, including the ICT BEE Charter Council, Balanced Score Card and Equity Targets."

"After extensive discussion by the Steering Committee, consensus was reached on the draft Charter. This draft Charter will be circulated by Friday 8 April to all interested parties for purposes of further and final consultation during April, before being submitted to Government."

The Steering Committee will formally invite the sub-sectors to meetings later this month to speed up the process.

In line with this, the Community/ Civil Society, Labour and Government sub-sectors will meet the Steering Committee on 18 April, Telecommunications and Broadcasting will meet on 19 April and the Electronics, IT and Multinational Companies sub-sectors will meet the Steering Committee on 20 April.
