SaabTech, part of Saab of Sweden, and Avitronics, part of Grintek of SA, have formed a joint business unit - Saab Avitronics.

In a statement issued today, SaabTech said its acquisition of the majority of Grintek had created the opportunity for a merger of the two groups' businesses within the electronic warfare (EW) and avionics area to form the new business unit.

This new joint organisation, comprising 1 250 employees in two countries, creates a competitive supplier of avionics and EW systems for platforms worldwide, says SaabTech.

"By combining our resources and operating as a joint business unit, we will further strengthen our competitiveness and market position worldwide," says Bj"orn Erman, president of SaabTech.

Saab Avitronics offers an EW product range for air, land and naval applications, including self-protection systems and a range of countermeasure dispensing systems, missile approach, laser and radar warning systems, jammers and systems for electronic intelligence.

Its product portfolio will also feature safety-critical utility and control systems, mission systems, such as reconnaissance systems and display systems, and a range of modular avionics for fighters, helicopters, transport and commercial aircraft.

The new business unit will start operating from 1 July.
