An increasing number of South African businesses are turning to "smart" boardroom solutions as a means of reducing costs and improving efficiencies, a local company says.

ETA Audiovisual recently completed the installation of a fully-equipped in-house smart boardroom, integrating audiovisual and wireless technology. The company says it has seen a steadily growing demand for this technology in recent months.

National sales manager Gert van der Merwe says the smart boardroom comprises a video conferencing system with a plasma screen, digital voice-recording, wireless access to a company`s network, Internet access and remote control of the boardroom peripherals.

The units are integrated into a compact environment, connected via wireless and controlled from a handheld remote unit, says Van der Merwe. He adds that the handheld remote also controls digital voice-recording, video conferencing equipment, DVD, VCR, lighting, sound, air-conditioning, projector, as well as the movement of the overhead screen.

The remote controls about 40 different functions in the background, while a built-in sensor will switch off the lights and equipment after a meeting if no movement occurs in the room.

"The response to the smart boardroom technology has been very positive. There is a big need for it in SA, as well as in the whole of Africa."

Van der Merwe says the solution has also been implemented in government, long-distance learning facilities and theatres.
