Siemens drives RFID to market

Munich, 13 Jul 2005

Siemens says it will have to create a market for radio frequency identification (RFID) applications before it can go to market with its RFID offerings.

"Our strategy is to prove the value of RFID applications because the market is not fully developed yet and conservative business leaders are unwilling to make investments in technology they consider to be unproven," says Winfried Holz, president of the global solution business at Siemens Business Services.

Holz told journalists in Munich that Siemens would compete aggressively in this market space, and aimed to be the global RFID market leader by 2011.

Holz said Siemens had developed core RFID competencies and products over the past 20 years, and could deliver "one-stop" RFID shopping including tags, readers, infrastructure, middleware, application engineering and supporting services.

Although conceding that much education still needed to be done around RFID and that the market was still in its infancy and not likely to grow significantly in the short-term, Holz said he believed that in time it would become unthinkable not to use the technology.
