Lumko Mtimde, a councillor with the Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA), has been appointed as CEO of the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA).
Mtimde will take up his new position when his four-year term as a councillor at ICASA ends on 30 June.
Mtimde says he was grateful to have been part of the process that changed the broadcasting landscape in SA so that citizens can have more options in terms of TV and radio.
"I have also been part of changing the telecommunications landscape to enable most South Africans to have access to telephony and be able to communicate with the world," he says.
From 2001 to 2002, Mtimde served as chief director in the broadcasting policy unit of the Department of Communications. He was a councillor with the Independent Broadcasting Authority from 1998 to 2000 and CEO of the National Community Radio Forum.
Mtimde says part of the struggle as a media activist in the 1980s and 1990s was the establishment of an enabling mechanism to support community media and the MDDA was born out of those struggles.
"I look forward to being part of a structure that provides support in order to give effect and meaning to the objectives of our new democracy," he says.
The term of office for councillors Nadia Bulbulia and Mamodupi Mohlala also ends in June.
