State IT Agency (SITA) CEO Mavuso Msimang will step down from the position once his replacement has been identified.
Msimang (65) is SITA's longest-serving CEO, having joined the company on 1 October 2003.
Following the expiry of his three-year contract at the end of September last year, Msimang requested SITA's board to relieve him of his duties.
"I am beginning to feel tired. My time at SITA was very intense, but enjoyable," he says, adding he is happy with SITA's progress under his leadership.
"I was appointed to stabilise the institution, and I think that has been achieved. SITA currently has good leadership and the respect of its clients. Government is also happy with the progress. I think it will be good for someone else to take the baton and run with it."
Msimang says a key challenge SITA faces will be to continue driving start-up projects such as the multimillion-rand Integrated Financial Management System. "The stakes are high, as this is government's entire ERP system."
He also notes the group will have to continue to leverage its partnerships and push government-mandated programmes.
Msimang says he is unlikely to ever take up a position in the ICT industry again, but will rather concentrate on part-time work or consulting.
The search for a successor will be conducted both internally and externally, he says. SITA notes in a statement that the process of finding a new CEO is under way.
"Msimang has ably led SITA to its current growth trajectory and has laid a solid platform for the executive team to further build on this success and continue to deliver on SITA's strategic objectives," said Thenjiwe Chikane, chairman of the SITA board.
"SITA owes its turnaround to the foresight and sound business decisions of Msimang and his executive team."
