Telkom has agreed to investigate the complaints of Milnerton Maritime Radio workers by 30 April, says trade union Solidarity.

The investigation comes after workers threatened to strike in response to Telkom's decision on 9 October to change the way the workers' duty roster was drawn up.

According to Solidarity spokesperson Jaco Kleynhans, Solidarity presented a memorandum to Telkom just before the workers planned to strike. He says the memorandum offered a postponement of the strike, if the company agreed to investigate the objections.

"We are satisfied with the written assurance that we have received from the company [Telkom] and we are convinced that our members will benefit," says Kleynhans.

Telkom says any agreement reached, or changes made, will also apply to the month of April.

A strike at the maritime radio division would have had far-reaching consequences, because it monitors the shipping in and out of SA's coastal areas, as well as all distress signals that occur between SA, South America and Australia.

"We are pleased the strike has been averted, since Milnerton Maritime Radio provides a vital service to shipping in South African waters," Kleynhans says.
