Further support for ABET project in Tshwane

Johannesburg, 26 Apr 2007

Sabinet Online, an electronic information company situated in Centurion, has announced that its chairperson's fund has increased its sponsorship towards Tshwane Community Library and Information Service's Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) programme.

Sabinet's sponsorship started in August 2006 and this initial sponsorship enabled the Tshwane Community Library and Information Services to open ABET centres in Temba, Garankuwa and Hammanskraal.

The tremendous success of the 2006 project encouraged Sabinet to continue its support. Sabinet's increase in sponsorship enables the addition of a further two ABET facilities in Tshwane.

The learners who attended the ABET classes have improved their writing and reading skills - some of the learners on level one are now for the first time in their lives able to write their own names. This is proof of the high impact that the programme has on the individuals as well as on the groups. About 80 learners have benefited from this programme during 2006, and the two new centres will provide an opportunity to an additional 50 learners during 2007.

According to Tshwane Community Library and Information Services, "Sabinet Online helps us living out our motto: We empower, we inform".

The new ABET centres are in Mamelodi (Stanza Bopape Community Hall) in eastern Tshwane as well as at the community library in Olievenhoutbosch, south of Tshwane.

The donated funds will be used as payment for the tutors as well as to train new facilitators, stationery, learning material and registrations at the exam board.

The Sabinet chairperson's fund has also taken two of Tshwane's libraries under its wing. The West Park Community Library and the Temba Community Library are supplied with equipment and funds to enable them to run effective community programmes in their areas.
