Fourier proves that mobile technology is here to stay

Mobile workforce and collaborative technologies both feature in the top four priorities for CIOs in 2006, according to Gartner's annual survey of 1 400 CIOs globally.

Johannesburg, 07 Aug 2007

Mobile solutions and personal digital assistants (PDAs) have been around for more than a decade, but have not made the impact predicted on the everyday business environment.

Specific applications have been developed with some successes to assist field and service personnel, but the benefits were offset by the cost and functionality deficiencies.

With the development of new technology, increased stability and reliability of devices and cheap bandwidth, more and more South African organisations (both private and public sector) are investigating mobile solutions again.

Demands on good management control and associated governance processes are at an all-time high in South Africa, and having control over a mobile workforce becomes critical. With extra functionality like real-time or offline data entry, integrated global positioning system (GPS) receivers for real-time tracking of people, integrated procedure manuals downloads, picture uploads etc. Fourier proved that the mobile technologies are back to provide solutions.

As part of its business process management (BPM) offering, Fourier has developed a mobile framework and proved the functionality to a large company with a distributed inspection force. The mobile solution with integrated GPS was found to be the only way to ensure governance for this organisation.

Productivity, efficiency and service levels are increased as these devices integrated directly into ERP or call centre applications, depending on the specific solution.

Jakes van der Mescht, marketing manager of Fourier, says: "We are excited about the opportunities in the market place in this regard and have seen many companies investing in technology and infrastructure to be able to have mobile workplace governance. Companies who understand and utilise the technology and solutions will have major return on their investment."
