MTN unveils CSR Foundation

MTN will establish a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Foundation which will create a special fund to undertake social responsibility services, for Ghanaian communities to benefit directly from the operations of the company in the country, reports The Statesman.

Mawuena Dumor, corporate services executive of MTN, revealed the foundation will be launched within the next two months and will support communities in the areas of education, health and sport.

MTN will focus on three key areas in order for it to become a major partner in the development process of Ghana.

Ericsson begins two CSR projects

Ericsson Malaysia has launched two programmes to show its commitment to CSR initiatives, by providing technological access to the underprivileged and creating new applications that will benefit the community, reports The Star.

Krishna Kumar, president and country manager, said the programmes could be expanded depending on their developments. "We will definitely look at other projects and areas. We are keen to support areas such as e-health and e-government by providing the relevant applications."

The first programme aims to set up a computer and broadband activity room in Rumah Nur Salam, a shelter for underprivileged children from the Chow Kit area.

Nigeria, UN adopt CSR strategy

The United Nations Children and Education Fund and Corporate Nigeria have agreed to adopt the worldwide 'One Laptop per Child' strategy as part of their corporate social responsibility projects in education, reports Africa News.

According to details, the organisations promoting the 'One Laptop per Nigerian Child' (OLPNC) initiative, together with UNICEF, will help attract leading corporate bodies for the scheme designed to give laptops to children in primary schools.

OLPC was initiated by Professor Nicholas Negroponte of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to help developing countries in the third world mainly to catch up with the global digital revolution.
